Recently, a friend of mine told me about three little words that almost changed his life. The three words? “I Don’t Have… ______ (you fill in the blank).” It made me think of the story of Gideon in the book of Judges. God gave Gideon a mission to deliver the Israelites, and Gideon responded, God, I don’t have power. I don’t have connections. I don’t have confidence you are really talking to me.
Eventually, Gideon came around and became a deliverer for the Israelites, but he certainly took a circuitous path.
There have been times in my life when I have felt God nudging me to do something I am uncomfortable with. If I am honest, my initial reaction is often similar to Gideon’s: “God, I don’t have the time [talent, money, eloquence, position].” However, when we are willing to do what God tell us, amazing things happen.
God has given each of us a mission: to share the gift of salvation both across the street and around the world. God has provided us with everything we need to go about this mission. In 2 Peter 1:3 we read, “His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.” He is looking for people with willing hearts, and he can use us even if we feel we are lacking. At the start of this year, take some time to reflect on this mission. Each morning, tell God you are then watch how he will use you.
