The Schweitzer Foundation Board typically welcomes new members each year. We serve three-year terms, and this year, we welcome Debbie Esselman and Paul Cowherd. Today, we highlight Paul, giving more interesting background about his life, vocation, and service.
TELL US YOUR STORY—HOW DID YOU COME TO COMMIT YOUR LIFE TO JESUS?
I have to give credit to my wife! Through most of my 20s, I had stopped going to church. When I began dating Hilary, I asked her what she was doing on Sunday, and she said she was going to church. I asked her what time I could pick her up! Our commitment to Christ has strengthened our relationship and made us a stronger team and better parents.
WHAT IS YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF SERVICE TO GOD’S KINGDOM?
Using our personal gifts and resources to give back! This isn’t just monetary; we can give back with time and knowledge to serve.
WHAT WAS YOUR REACTION TO BEING ASKED TO SERVE ON THE FOUNDATION BOARD?
I was shocked that I was asked! But very excited to serve.

This is an excellent opportunity to get involved at Schweitzer and use my talents to help grow the Foundation.
WHAT EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS DO YOU BRING TO THE BOARD?
My background in commercial banking and finance is helping people! My job exposes me to estate planning through trusts, legal contracts, and tax codes. Being successful in banking is all about helping people find solutions and think outside the box to put a deal together. The Board is an opportunity for me to contribute my professional skills and network to grow the foundation.

The Foundation is a place for people to leave legacy gifts to Schweitzer.
