Over the past year, I have felt a growing call to serve those in my community who face language barriers. I trained with a program called Perspectives, which helped me see how we as Christians have a responsibility to fulfill Jesus’ Great Commission from Matthew 28:19-20.
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
As I took the class, I realized that mission work isn’t just something that happens overseas—it starts right here in our own neighborhoods. We have the opportunity to reach immigrants who long to connect and understand. We can build relationships and share the love of Jesus while offering practical help to those in need.
Meeting a Local Need
Many in our community face daily struggles because of language barriers. Whether communicating at work, helping their children with school, or engaging in conversations at church, learning English is a crucial step toward building a better future. This fall, Schweitzer will offer a class meant to bridge that gap—providing a welcoming and faith-filled environment where people can develop their language skills while also experiencing the love and support of a Christian community.
Faith in Action
Jesus calls us to love our neighbors, and that love often requires action. Hebrews 13:2 reminds us, “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.” This English as a Second Language (ESL) class is an opportunity to live out our faith by extending kindness, patience, and encouragement to those navigating the challenges of learning a new language and culture.
