We’re excited to welcome Robert Freeman to Schweitzer as our new Director of Student Ministry! Robert, his wife Chelsie, and their three young children, Guinevere, Iyler, and Henry, recently moved here from Dickson, Tennessee, where Robert was born and raised.
Robert comes to ministry from a unique background. He spent 16 years in the radio industry as both a DJ and program director, reaching over 150,000 listeners each morning. But in early 2023, he sensed a clear call from the Lord to transition into full-time ministry, specifically student ministry. That call led to conversations with Schweitzer Church that began in late 2024 and came into focus during Holy Week of this year, when everything from clarity in prayer to finding housing began falling into place.
Raised in a small church of fewer than 100 people, Robert credits that community with forming the early foundations of his faith. He names his grandmother as a spiritual compass in his life, always pointing him toward faithfulness and the importance of gathering with the church. In more recent years, Robert says his wife Chelsie has been instrumental in reshaping his view of Jesus and the church, helping him move beyond a legalistic upbringing and into a more grace-filled walk with Christ.
Robert’s passion for student ministry comes from wanting to give young people what he didn’t have growing up: a place to be known, supported, and loved unconditionally. He’s especially excited to work with Schweitzer students who are actively seeking to grow in their faith and build community.
In this season, Robert has been drawn to Acts 1:8 and the call to be witnesses “to the ends of the earth.” Leaving his hometown and community wasn’t easy, but he and his family are trusting God’s call to Springfield.
Robert invites the church to support him and Schweitzer Students through both prayer and presence, and encourages anyone interested in serving to reach out and get involved. “Be our people,” Robert says. “Everyone has something to bring to the table, and we want to use your gifts in this ministry, so please consider volunteering. We’re excited to see what the Lord is going to do with Schweitzer Students going forward, and so glad to be here!”
