For much of her life, Mary Decker was an avid runner and hiker who found joy in movement and the beauty of God’s creation. But in 2021, her ability to move changed when she started showing symptoms of ALS.
Last year, with the encouragement of a physical therapist friend, she visited the Warm Water Therapy Pool at the CoxHealth Meyer Center, where she discovered a miracle in the water—mobility.
“The results have been nothing short of astonishing,” says Mary. “In the water, I experience a level of mobility that surprises everyone, including myself. On land, I cannot lift my legs or move my arms independently. But in the water, I can kick my legs, move my arms, and with assistance, I can walk. It feels miraculous.”
The team at the Meyer Center, her devoted husband Darrell, and her dedicated “pool party” team of friends have made these transformative experiences possible. Yet, the water is not the only place Mary has found incredible support.
Shortly after her ALS diagnosis, her son, Jonathan, reassured her with words that continue to bring her comfort: “We will fight this as a family. You are not alone.” Though she knew her family would stand by her, she never could have anticipated the extraordinary love and care that would follow.
Since ALS has taken away her ability to use her arms and legs, she relies on others for nearly everything. When Darrell was recently hospitalized, Mary felt vulnerable—but her family, friends, and community immediately stepped in, putting their own lives on hold to care for her.
Beyond her immediate family, an incredible community has surrounded her with generosity and kindness. Friends, neighbors, and colleagues have provided freshly prepared meals, assisted with errands, and ensured she stays socially connected. Some have even stepped in to help with her personal care, ensuring she never feels alone in this journey. Her “pool party” team continues to bring her joy through adaptive swimming sessions, a gift that allows her to experience freedom and movement.
The unwavering support she has received has been a profound blessing. Through the kindness and care of her loved ones and community, Mary sees a glimpse of God’s kingdom on earth. “Over the past two years, I have witnessed a beautiful outpouring of love that has carried Darrell and me through our most difficult days,” she shares. “In this kindness, I see hope—not just for us, but for the world.”
While ALS has taken much from Mary, it has also revealed the depth of love in her life. From the smallest gestures to the grandest acts of service, her community has been a source of strength and encouragement. She continues to be uplifted by the prayers, visits, and companionship of those around her.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, affects the nerves in the spinal cord and brain. Eventually, it causes loss of muscle control needed to move, speak, eat, and breathe.
Is there a cure?
There is no cure for this fatal disease, though researchers are continually learning more about the disease. Many feel we are closer than ever to finding a cure.
How do you feel? Are you in pain?
Thankfully, I am not in any pain. I do get uncomfortable and stiff from spending so many hours in my wheelchair. I also tend to tire more easily than I did before. So, aside from this flare-up of ALS, I feel pretty good.

You were diagnosed with ALS one year after you retired. Are you mad at God?
Sometimes. Like many people with a serious illness, I asked, “Why me?” I do not believe God is angry at me or punishing me. The first six months after my diagnosis were devastating. Then, I realized the many ways God had prepared me for this journey. I believe He walks beside me daily and will be with me in the future. He will not abandon me.
How can we support you?
My best days are the days that I can connect with people. Encouraging words mean so much to me and lift my spirits. Several people have sent me their favorite scripture verse.
