How do you truly get to know the people in your neighborhood? That was the question we at Flourish asked ourselves nearly three years ago. Despite visiting several churches in the Heart of the Westside, we found that most attendees lived outside the neighborhood, and the churches themselves weren’t actively engaged with the local community. The neighborhood school was under reconstruction, leaving a void where connection and activity should have been. Even the neighborhood association meeting was nearly empty—only the president, vice-president, and secretary attended.
So what could we do?
Going door-to-door seemed bold—maybe even a little crazy. How would we introduce ourselves? What reason would we give for showing up unannounced? Then, inspiration struck: Memorial Day was just weeks away. What if we honored those who had served by handing out small garden-sized American flags?
With that idea, we ordered 150 flags, attached heartfelt notes, and set out on foot. We had no idea what to expect. Would anyone be home? Would they even answer the door? To our surprise, many neighbors were in, and more importantly, they welcomed us. They accepted the flags with gratitude, appreciating the gesture and the effort to commemorate the day.
Last month, Flourish celebrated its third Memorial Day in the neighborhood the same way we did the first—walking door to door, handing out flags. But this time, things were different. Familiar faces greeted us warmly, porch conversations stretched longer, and in some flower pots, those very first flags still remained—a quiet yet powerful reminder of the connections we’ve built.
What started as a simple gesture—walking door to door with a small flag—has blossomed into something much greater. Since that first Memorial Day, Flourish has become more than just visitors in the neighborhood—we’ve become neighbors. We celebrate milestones together, welcome students on their first day of school, support teachers on appreciation day, and uplift young girls through Flourish Girls. Our summer community-wide event is now a neighborhood tradition. And what began as Memorial Day visits has grown to include National Good Neighbor Day and Thanksgiving, bringing small tokens of kindness to front porches throughout the year.
The transformation we’ve witnessed is even more incredible. A once-quiet park is now alive with morning walkers and families playing together. The neighborhood association has grown, filled with new voices and fresh ideas. When a strong storm downed trees and cut power, Flourish showed up—not as outsiders, but as neighbors—grilling hamburgers and hot dogs for those in need.
Connections forged through simple acts of goodwill—whether a flag, a card, or a conversation on the porch—have strengthened the fabric of the community. It’s proof that real change starts small. A knock on the door, a moment of kindness, and a willingness to show up—these are the things that turn strangers into neighbors, neighbors into friends, and friends into a community.
