Spiritual Growth On Purpose

What is your plan for discipleship? When we want to save money, we create a budget. When we want to lose weight, we start a diet. But when it comes to spiritual growth, it’s easy to feel lost and unsure about the process. Spiritual formation (the process of becoming closer to Jesus and more like him) is often a slow process, and the results are less objectively quantifiable, but this does not mean we cannot make an intentional plan for growth. As in any other area of positive growth, we are unlikely to find ourselves spiritually transformed merely by accident. It is by committing to God and pursuing the next steps he has for us that we can change. As Timothy Keller said, “All change comes from deepening your understanding of the salvation of Christ and living out the changes that understanding creates in your heart.”

If you’re looking for a next step, here are a few resources to consider that may help you to be intentional in your discipleship journey. Keep in mind, though, none of these practices are metrics for spiritual depth. Rather, they create space for God to do what only he can do: transform our lives and make us like him. Take the next step with God, and watch what he will do to change your life.

Spiritual Health Reflection: This self-assessment from Practicing The Way helps us gauge the trajectory of our life with God, identify a focus area the Spirit is highlighting for growth, and create action steps to address it. You can find more information and take the reflection here. (https://www.practicingtheway.org/reflection)

Examen Prayer: This is an ancient form of prayer intended to help us reflect at the end of our day. Through a few simple steps, we look back at where we experienced God today, we confess times where we failed to live as God intended for us, and we look forward, asking for God’s providence and guidance in the day to come. Here is a simple handout to help guide your prayer. (https://schweitzer.church/pray-the-examen)

Lectio 365: This app invites you to begin your day with God by listening to or reading a 15-minute devotional that follows the P.R.A.Y. rhythm: Pause, Reflect on Scripture, Ask for God’s help, and Yield to his will. You can find more information and a link to install the app here. (https://lectio365.com/)

Journey Together: As with any journey, it’s easier if we go together. Think about who else in your life is moving in the same direction that you can join with for mutual support. If you can’t think of anyone, joining a group may be a great way to embark on your adventure with others. You can find information about all of Schweitzer’s available groups here.
